Our vision

Welcome to the Northern Writers’ Centre

The Northern Writers’ Centre will be a flagship venue for writers, young people and literature audiences in Newcastle upon Tyne and will be the first of its kind in the UK.

The Centre will be an important addition to the North East’s exceptional arts scene and to Newcastle University’s Cultural Quarter.

The partnership to deliver the project brings together the School of English at Newcastle University and New Writing North, the writing development agency for the north east of England.

The project builds on the unique literary strengths of the North East, a region that has produced such leading writers as David Almond, Pat Barker, Basil Bunting, Lee Hall, Barry McSweeney and Alan Plater, and which is already home to Seven Stories, the Centre for Children’s Books; Bloodaxe Books, the largest independent publisher of poetry in the country; and the Northern Rock Foundation Writer’s Award, at £75,000 the most generous award for writers in Britain.
