Enhancing learning

The establishment of the Centre will make the School of English at Newcastle University the leading place to study Creative Writing in the UK.

The Centre will contribute to the development of teaching at Undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral level and will provide dedicated workspace for Creative Writing postgraduate students. It will also support and expand the popular short courses which cover a wide range of topics, including writing for radio and TV, and which are open to all.

The Centre will function as a meeting place for literary dialogues of all kinds, not least those between academics and professional writers. Students will be given the unique opportunity to develop accredited professional skills by working as interns in literature organisations.

Research projects emerging from the Centre will include translation and cross-arts collaborations on film-poems, staged and scripted readings, and performances with musicians and composers. Exploring innovative ways of linking scholarly and creative practice is a major aim of the Centre and it will bring together world-class literary researchers with creative writers for international conferences.

The Centre will provide the venue for the annual Newcastle University-Bloodaxe Poetry Lectures, given by leading poets and critics, who have included Jo Shapcott, David Constantine and Jane Hirshfield.

The Centre will enrich the experience of Newcastle University students and staff as well as the general public by bringing writers of international standing to Newcastle as visiting readers and fellows, and by establishing strong links with parallel institutions worldwide.
